WHERE IS TIME FOR ME?

So many of my clients ask, "How can I be more balanced? There is not enough time in the day for me to take care of myself."
My first question to each of the individuals is: "WHAT IS YOUR VISION? IF YOU COULD HAVE TOTAL BALANCE AND SET ASIDE TIME JUST FOR YOU DURING THE DAY, WHAT WOULD THAT LOOK LIKE?" Then I sit back and wait....knowing the mind is processing.
Many times it is as simple as wanting to read a few chapters of a book a day, reading the newspaper, taking a walk, having quiet time, going to the gym, eating better...the list goes on.

The brainstorming begins...when 3 ideas have been selected, I ask them to choose ONE.
With that one idea, we go through this process:

1. how will you fit this into your day?
2. what would it look like if you did _____ daily?
3. what would be the benefits of you doing this?
4. how will you commit to following through?
5. what was the struggle for you in the past when this was not accomplished?
6. what will be different this time?
7. how will you be accountable?
8. knowing your strength as being x,y,z, how can you it to best serve you?

Then the SMART acronym comes into play.
The goals must be S-simple; M-measurable; A-attainable; R-realistic; T-time-oriented
Too many times our goals are too huge, overwhelming and nothing gets done. So start small.
If a goal is to sit quietly and read the newspaper for 1 hour...is that being realistic when you only can allow for 1/2 hour? If you had only 15 minutes, how would you feel with that? If you wanted to take a walk, your goal is 5 times a week, to make it realistic and attainable...why not start with 3 times a week. The whole point of this process is to be successful!
Start small and gain the success, motivation and be inspired.
Take the time to chart your own course...
ONE STEP AT A TIME.

DON'T JUST LIVE THE LIFE YOU'VE BEEN GIVEN, MAKE THE LIFE YOU WANT.

A GIFT

I received this today and thought I would share it with all of you.
Sallie

Old Age, I decided, is gift. I am now, probably for the first time in my life, the person I have always wanted to be. Oh, not my body! I sometime despair over my body, the wrinkles, the baggy eyes, and the sagging butt. And often I am taken aback by that old person that lives in my mirror (who looks like my mother!), but I don't agonize over those things for long. I would never trade my amazing friends, my wonderful life, my loving family for less gray hair or a flatter belly. As I've aged, I've become more kind to myself, and less critical of myself. I've become my own friend. I don't chide myself for eating that extra cookie, or for not making my bed, or for buying that silly cement gecko that I didn't need, but looks so avante garde on my patio. I am entitled to a treat, to be messy, to be extravagant. I have seen too many dear friends leave this world too soon; before they understood the great freedom that comes with aging. Whose business is it if I choose to read or play on the computer until 4 AM and sleep until noon? I will dance with myself to those wonderful tunes of the 60&70's, and if I, at the same time, wish to weep over a lost love ... I will. I will walk the beach in a swim suit that is stretched over a bulging body, and will dive into the waves with abandon if I choose to, despite the pitying glances from the jet set. They, too, will get old. Sure, over the years my heart has been broken. How can your heart not break when you lose a loved one, or when a child suffers, or even when somebody's beloved pet gets hit by a car? But broken hearts are what give us strength and understanding and compassion. A heart never broken is pristine and sterile and will never know the joy of being imperfect. I am so blessed to have lived long enough to have my hair turning gray, and to have my youthful laughs be forever etched into deep grooves on my face. So many have never laughed, and so many have died before their hair could turn silver. As you get older, it is easier to be positive. You care less about what other people think. I don't question myself anymore. I've even earned the right to be wrong. So, to answer your question, I like being old. It has set me free. I like the person I have become. I am not going to live forever, but while I am still here, I will not waste time lamenting what could have been, or worrying about what will be. And I shall eat dessert every single day. (If I feel like it)

COUNTING DOWN

So, have you been out there in the maddening crowds? Are you enjoying the hustle and bustle?
What will it take for you to slow down, take a deep breath and regroup?
Funny thing is it took a snowstorm for me to settle in. If you were in New England you might have remembered the snowstorm which took place last week...the one where it took people 6 hours to drive home (usually took them 1 hour). Well it was then that youngest son, 21, popped up and said "Let's go to the mall." My response was..."Are you nuts? Look outside." His usual playful smile melted me once more...why not. We did have 4-wheel drive and we could make it. Why not, the snow is beautiful, so much to see. Dawning our boots, mittens, and parkas we headed out with everyone else trying to get home. It took us one hour to go a normal 11 minute route. What could have caught us in laughter from the time we got into the car until we arrived at Best Buy?
1. We could not believe that we were out in this storm.
2. It was spontaneous.
3. It was an adventure.
4. NO ONE WOULD BE IN THE MALLS.
what a great way to finish up our shopping!!
Yes, no one was there. 17 employees came storming over to us asking us if we needed help. They too could not believe that we were actually shopping.
It was well worth it. It gave me the interruption I needed away from the hectic pace, even for a couple of hours.
So as the New Year unveils, do something spontaneous...you will never know the freedom unless you do it...or the laughter. Try it.

SDAs...

No, it is not a disease or a virus...though it can get under your skin. A SDA is called in business,
a SINGLE DAILY ACTION. Is there something that you are procrasting with or find multiplying under your very eyes? Do you want to reduce it or eliminate it? Tried? Failed?
Well, I have just the answer and here are some tips:

1. Make a list of 10 items that you are procrasting on doing
2. Choose 1 of those items and make a commitment to yourself that you will undertake this chore each day.
3. Now that you have selected that SDA, let's strategize how you are going to go about doing this. I will use myself as an example. I hate filing, loathe it, but know that it must be done.
So what can I do to make it easier.

FIRST.
* Made a date with myself in my calendar to do this early in the morning
* I am picking the time I work best, early morning
* I pledge to keep this agreement with myself, one half hour...no more
* I am committing to do this for one week straight
* I will not be distracted, no phone, no looking at emails
SECOND.
What does it give me in return?

*Having done this now for one week, there has been a shift in my attitude.
*The clutter of a desk and papers all around made me less focused, therefore, becoming less productive or scattered on some days.
*By having a goal and some structure, I feel more rooted and alert. I need a clearer desk to work.
* MAKE SURE THAT YOU TREAT YOURSELF FOR A JOB WELL DONE...massage,
ice cream, walk on the beach, go to your favorite store, whatever it is for you.

Tip: Make your SDAs small. The key is to make it a success. When you have accomplished that one, go on to the next...you will be amazed at what you can accomplish. You might be adding to your list, but you will also feel the reward of crossing off items on a very large TO DO list. Do a little bit each day, that is the gold at the end of the rainbow.
