WHAT IS IT TO LIVE LIFE SIMPLY?

This past week I spent 5 days in the Northern Woods of Maine. I believe it was the farthest north I have ever been in Maine. We arrived via float plane from Greenville to Pleasant Lake where my sister and her husband have a camp. They had invited us to join them for a group birthday. Never had I seen such an array of the color green from the trees below. We were 60 miles south of Canada where logging is still very much a way of life. As we approached the lake, the very first thing I did was remove my watch. I wanted to be totally present and not be dictated by an instrument on my wrist. For five days I sat, I listened, I looked. I heard the repetitiveness of the waves lapping on the shore, I gazed at a bald eagle aloft, I watched thunderous rain storms pound across the lake and sat in the evenings by the campfire. I sat there wondering why we live in a world that prides themselves with "getting more."
There was an outhouse; 8-plates, forks, spoons, knives; no fresh running water; a gas powered refrigerator (that held only the necessities) and gas lit lamps that only were turned on in the evening. I noticed that the quietness was deafening. I went to bed with the loons and awoke to the loons. The smells brought me back to memories of being a camper...the pines, the moss, the ferns...the bugs.
I learned that one can live with so little and yet have so much. It is the materials that surround us that makes our lives/existence cumbersome.
So what is my goal?
I am challenging myself to go through every closet, every nook and cranny, every ounce of our house, garage and storage shed and purge myself of all that is not NECESSARY.
There is no place for, "Well, I may need it later."
What time frame have I given myself? Thanksgiving is the date...
why? because I will be GIVING THANKS for when it is all done!
What about you, what can you pass on to another or donate to a cause?
